first look
We would absolutely love it if all couples would consider breaking the tradition of not seeing each other prior to the ceremony... which originated with arranged marriages, and the thought that if the bride saw her groom, literally for the first time, before the ceremony, that she would not want to marry him... how that's been adopted to modern weddings stumps me (I fell for it too, and it was my one wedding regret)  Here's a quick little comparison to how the mood is when doing a 'first look' vs. well, not, doing a 'first look'...

NOT doing a 'first look'

a stressful game of hiding as to not see each other beforehand

the couples can't usually have honest, pure emotions when seeing each for the 1st time because all eyes are on them, because they're self conscious and/or you can't usually have a minute to do so during the ceremony

after the ceremony it's so rush rush rush that the couple usually don't have a minute to themselves, perhaps only in the limo when doing a fake getaway

a limited time for photos

wanting to rush photos to hurry up and get to the reception to party/see guests

photos looking like they were rushed, and not having all that much fun while doing them or not having a lot of photos to choose from

doing a 'first look'

a nice, photogenic first look spot is picked out where the couple can intimately see each other prior to the ceremony.  we try and recreate the 'coming down the aisle' anticipation by using the actual aisle, or walk down stairs, a hallway, etc.

the couple can tell each other how gorgeous one another look, exchange kisses, and not worry about staying quite during the ceremony or 200 eyes watching your every move.

alone time before pictures to take in the excitement of the day and how special it really is
as much time for pictures as you'd like

the time to go to different locations for pictures to achieve a variety of looks

stress-free picture time & a lot of fun doing it because you're not even thinking about going to the reception yet

the whole bridal party can hang out together before the ceremony, and really take in what the day is about

no rushing to the reception, guests have their cocktail hour and that time can be utilized how ever you wish... celebrating in the limo, more pictures, hanging out at a bar, arriving to the reception early, etc. etc
