I have always said photographing for other artists is the best challenge I can give myself.  Brittany & Tyler are both graphic designers in Chicago, living the total dream life for 20s somethings... rad jobs in the arts, killer condo in Bucktown/West Town/Wicker Park ;)  I unexpectedly had a free Saturday come up and decided to make a day trip to Chicago for their engagement photos.  It worked out perfectly, the weather was oddly warm for November.  Brittany & Tyler are head over heels in love, adorable, made photographing them easy peasy.

I have visited Chicago a dozen or so times previous, but never with a Chicagoan.  I really feel in love with the city during this trip.  I thought Seattle was the only contender as a possibly place to move in a few years, but now Chicago is really looking to be the realistic option... so we shall see.

On with the photos...

Love these, I can't pick which one I love most. I think it's a tie between the subway shot and the doorway shot on the busy street. They both look so relaxed and happy! Congrats Tyler and Brittany!!

I knew Beth & Joey would be a ton of fun to photograph when we met for their consult... they were all laughs, which made the green flags in my brain start waving around, fun couple! fun couple!  They most definitely brought it... they were as easy as pie to photograph and I am beyond stoked for their wedding next year!!!

While doing my mentoring session in Seattle at the end of June, I fell in love with the fabulous letterpress business cards of the equally fabulous Sarah Rhoads.  Not to be punny, but to hold a thick, letterpress business card definitely makes a lasting impression and I knew I wanted some of my own.

This is where Sarah (of Sarah + CJ) came in.

Sarah is a super rad graphic designer for a hip firm here in Toledo, and instead of attempting to make my own new letterpress cards, I contacted Sarah to see if she'd be interested in the work.  By the time we wrapped up the design, Sarah mentioned that she would like to do another engagement-esque photo shoot that encompassed her and CJ's love of water and water sports.  They were super photogenic the first time, so I was all for another shoot.  Times are tough, and I am definitely willing to barter ;)

I love color.  I love going to Lowes and standing in front of the paint swatch displays and just staring.  I love neon lights, and what long exposures do to the colors.  When it came time to do Heather & Andy's engagement shoot I suggested going to the county fair... I thought it would be fun and colorful... totally different atmosphere then the normal engagement shoots I do.  Thankfully they agreed that it could be fun, and I love the photos we took.  We had a blast people watching , talking and laughing.  Good times :)

In the past 3 months I have done 12 engagement shoots... trying to keep each one of them visually unique from one another used to be a stress in my life.  I would freak out when looking at my calendar, trying to figure out what new location I would go to.  As we all know, Toledo isn't that big of an area and doesn't have too many super cool spots that we can just go to a new one every time.  Instead, I challenge myself to go back to spots I have already gone to and attempt to shoot it with fresh eyes.  So back to Grand Rapids, the hometown of Julie + Rolando.  They said their friends were surprised that they'd be doing their shoot near home, but I assured them that they would look at their city in a whole new light....
