When we meet with couples who are planning an intimate wedding, no bridal party or over the top decor, my ears perk. While it is blast to photograph weddings with a ton of stuff, it is a nice change of pace to photograph laid back, intimate events. Lauren & Chris were married in the backyard with immediate family as their witnesses. They hosted a cocktail hour with close friends & family at The Kitchen.

Not going to lie, it’s pretty exciting when a Toledo bride emails me before she has a wedding venue or even a date solidified. It’s exciting! Often those couples will ask me: ‘What are some of your favourite wedding locations to photograph?’ Love answering this!
I’m a lover of light, bright, refreshing spaces. Unique wedding spaces are not hard to come by in Toledo! I like when a venue has a minimalistic feel leaving the couple to ‘paint’ their canvas. Here are 3 of my favourite venues to photograph weddings at and why!
Probably the most modern venue in the area. I love playing with all of the reflections, doesn’t pose a problem in photographing portraits, as some people may think. Modern, clean aesthetic, there are so many different ways to add decor.
Bonus: Amazing food AND a glass blowing demo for your guests during cocktail hour!
Industrial, modern feel. In the Historic Secor Building downtown Toledo, this building is made of reinforced concrete which has been exposed during more recent renovations. Massive concrete columns and polished concrete floors throughout. The building is home to some of Toledo’s most interesting artists, which allows guests to wander throughout the galleries on floors 5, 6 & 7.
Bonus: Also an art gallery and again, amazing food!
My favourite part about TCC is the open vibe that lends itself perfectly to mingling. The open porch and sunken outdoor dance floor on a warm night is just divine. You’ll often see guests lounging on porch chairs in between dances.
Bonus: Great backup room if it is raining for your outdoor ceremony… and amazing food! Oh and a fresh coat of paint now gives the dining room a more modern, neutral feel!
I know I said 3 but I’ve got one more for you…
One of NW Ohio’s newest venues, The Stables is in Whitehouse Ohio right near Oak Openings, which is just so dreamy let’s head over there for some portraits, right?!? It doesn’t have the typical barn feel… it’s a mix of rustic/industrial/modern. Polished concrete floors, exposed barn wood and open concept, another venue where the couple can choose how rustic to go. Definitely don’t have to do mason jars and burlap at The Stables!
Bonus: Dreamy yard for outdoor ceremony, ponies, around the corner from Oak Openings! And the string lights come standard!
It was a labor of love for a few months, collaborating on this shoot with Aimee of Modernly Events. I photographed Aimee & Matthew’s wedding in September of 2012 & we shared a common love of mid century modern design, architecture & furnishings. I recall leaving their wedding & saying to them: ‘It’s totally normal to want to start doing weddings’ (or something to that affect). I think in the back of my head, I saw that she excelled at completing a cohesive vision for a large event. If you peek through their wedding, you’ll see just how true this is. I was thrilled when I heard of her new venture into event design & furniture rental! She came up with the initial concept based on artist Alexander Girard’s sun imagery & we went bananas from there bringing that vision to life. It was a total blast, stressful, but I am so so happy with how everything came together!
Big thanks to all the professionals involved…

Married on Put in Bay Island, I had a feeling Faith and Jeff’s modern nautical wedding would get some attention in the area. Elite Events executed the preppy theme perfectly! I was blown away with their reception decor at Put in Bay Yacht Club!

Hard to believe another year has flown by & I’m pulling my favourite images from the year! 2013 was a year full of growth… photographing births, small businesses, commercial campaigns & of course weddings. Each of those so different from one another on the surface, but really when looking through the photos as a whole, they all feel so similar. People having fun, great energy! We have a ton of fun while on shoots, connecting with the people who photograph, no matter what the subject matter. Always humbling to look back & see the moments we were able to capture for the people who trusted us to be there for the biggest moments in their lives. THANK YOU!
Cheers to 2013!
